When I interviewed Lukas Nelson last week–in advance of the gig with his band Promise of the Real in Vancouver this Saturday–we talked a lot about Neil Young.

And not just ’cause we both love him.

Nelson played guitar on Shakey’s upcoming album, The Monsanto Years, and POTR may well be Young’s next touring band.

At one point I asked him what his fave Neil Young album was, kinda hoping that it might be that 1975 Crazy Horse gem, Zuma.

“Oh that’s hard, man,” said Nelson. “I mean, I go through phases. Sleeps with Angels is one of my favourites. I really like Comes a Time; that’s a great record.

“And then, let’s see, I think maybe my all-time favourite has got to be either On the Beach or Tonight’s the Night.”

Uh… yeah… okay. Fine choices. But what about Zuma?

“Zuma’s a great record,” he admitted. “I love Zuma. You know, they’re all great.”

Alright! Whew. Glad we got that straightened out.

For more from Nelson about his work with Neil Young and his dad Willie, see the story in this week’s Georgia Straight. Read it on paper for that old-school “Cortez the Killer” vibe.
