The Everly Brothers’ second “comeback” album is a worthy successor to their first, EB84. The latter album sported a nice hit single written by Paul McCartney (“On the Wings of a Nightingale”), and once more Phil and Don have carefully chosen other people’s songs to showcase their distinctive harmonies.
They cover songs by Rank and File (“Amanda Ruth”), Sutherland Brothers and Quiver (“Arms of Mary”), Dire Straits (“Why Worry”), and even Bob Dylan (“Abandoned Love”). The only song written by one of the brothers is Don Everly’s sweeping “Born Yesterday”.
Born Yesterday was produced by Dave Edmunds, and features the slick guitarwork of Albert Lee. If you’re looking for an album that rocks a little but is mostly made up of light, lovely ballads, then this would be a worthy choice.
