Night of the Hunter screens at VIFF Centre

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: the Vancouver Writers Fest explores the power of storytelling through dozens of events with local and international authors at various Vancouver venues. Writers taking part include Caroline Adderson, Roddy Doyle, Drew Hayden Taylor, John Vaillant, Andrey Kurkov, Aislinn Hunter, and Elamin Abdelmahmoud.

TUESDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of Night of the Hunter, actor-turned-director Charles Laughton’s 1955 adaptation of Davis Grubb’s novel about two children fleeing from a psychotic evangelical preacher who believes they know the whereabouts of a stash of money.

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the Arts Club Theatre presents performances at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage until October 27 of Jersey Boys, a musical that tells the story of New Jersey hitmakers Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Echo runs at Concord Pacific Place

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Cirque du Soleil‘s Echo, running to January 5 at Concord Pacific Place, combines poetry, stagecraft, acrobatics, and technology to explores the delicate balance between people, animals, and the world.

THURSDAY: Genesis tribute band The Musical Box performs at the Vogue Theatre on its Selling England By the Pound 50th anniversary tour.

THURSDAY TO FRIDAY: performances at the Metro Theatre until November 2 of Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of novelist Susan Hill’s ghost story The Woman in Black, starring and directed by Bernard Cuffling.

Fright Nights on the PNE Grounds

THURSDAY TO FRIDAY: Fright Nights features eight haunted houses, wandering scare artists, over 15 midway rides, and spooky foods, running until October 31 on select nights at the PNE Grounds (Hastings and Windermere).

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Horror Show Film Festival at Cineplex International Village features a screening of the Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone 2, plus the short film “Close and Lock the Patio Door”, with live taping of the CBC podcast Let’s Make a Horror.

FRIDAY: North Carolina indie-folk band Hiss Golden Messenger plays the Hollywood Theatre.

Brandon Isaak plays Blue Frog Studios

FRIDAY: blues-roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Brandon Isaak performs at Blue Frog Studios with a band composed of keyboardist Mike Kalanj, upright bassist Pat Darcus, and drummer Chris “The Wrist” Nordquist. Here’s the interview I did with Brandon Isaak back in 2002 when he was in the Twisters.
