Kim Mitchell plays the Commodore

MONDAY: Canadian party-rocker Kim Mitchell (“Go For Soda”), former member of Max Webster, plays the Commodore Ballroom. Here’s my interview with Kim Mitchell from 1984.

MONDAY: Remembrance Day screening at the Rio Theatre of They Shall Not Grow Old, director Peter Jackson’s 2018 documentary about World War I, as told by the soldiers who fought it.

MONDAY: Remembrance Day screening at the VIFF Centre of Porcelain War, directors Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev’s documentary about three three Ukrainian artists who elect to stay and fight after Russian invades their country. In Ukranian and Russian with English subtitles.

MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báez, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Flames are in town

TUESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on division rivals the Calgary Flames in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Cirque du Soleil‘s Echo, running to January 5 at Concord Pacific Place, combines poetry, stagecraft, acrobatics, and technology to explores the delicate balance between people, animals, and the world.

THURSDAY: the Surf Rockabilly Rumble! at the Heatley features performances by the Interstellar Riders and Butch & the Lowbrows.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: the four-day Eastside Culture Crawl sees more than 50 artists on Vancouver’s Eastside–painters, jewellers, sculptors, furniture makers, weavers, potters, printmakers, photographers, and glassblowers–opening their studios to the public.

FRIDAY: El Paso, Texas alt-rock band Sparta, featuring former At the Drive-in member Jim Ward, plays the Pearl, with guests Precursor and Down the Lees.

Wild Child plays the Rickshaw

FRIDAY: Texas indie-pop band Wild Child and South Carolina indie-rock act Susto play a coheadlining bill at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guest Judy Blank.
