Sorcerer screens at the Cinematheque

FRIDAY: British indie-rock quartet the Vaccines performs tunes from new album Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations at the Hollywood Theatre, with guests Thus Love. SOLD OUT.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: music director Otto Tausk leads the Vancouver Symphony and violinist Francesca Dego in a program at the Orpheum Theatre that includes Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the annual PuSh Festival, running until February 9 at various Vancouver venues, features contemporary works of live art–dance, theatre, music, and multimedia–by local, national, and international performers.

It’s All Gonna Break screens at VIFF Centre

FRIDAY & SUNDAY: screenings at VIFF Centre of It’s All Gonna Break, director Stephen Chung’s music documentary about Canadian indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báezorganized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

SATURDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of Sorcerer, director William Friedkin’s 1977 remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 thriller The Wages of Fear, about four outcasts who agree to drive two truckloads of nitroglycerine over treacherous jungle roads to an oil-well fire raging 350 miles away.

Los Furios plays the Rickshaw

SATURDAY: Vancouver ska-punk band Los Furios performs tunes from latest album Old Ghosts at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests the Vanrays and Paul Pigat.

SATURDAY: International Guitar Night at New Westminster’s Massey Theatre features performances by Germany’s Lulo Reinhardt and Sönke Meinen, Britain’s Alexandra Whittingham, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Niwel Tsumbu.

SATURDAY: the Rogue Folk Club and the Pacific Bluegrass and Old Time Music Society present John Reischman & the Jaybirds at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James.

The Red Wings are in town

SUNDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Detroit Red Wings in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.
