FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Calgary Flames in National Hockey League preseason action at Rogers Arena.

FRIDAY: Canadian rocker Todd Kerns, bassist and backup singer for Slash and former frontman for the Age of Electric, plays a solo show at the Roxy Cabaret.

FRIDAY: the BC Lions take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Canadian Football League action at BC Place.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Vancouver guitar-rock greats 54-40, featuring lead vocalist and main songwriter Neil Osborne, play two nights at the Commodore Ballroom. Here’s my interview with Neil Osborne from 2000.

Fright Nights at the PNE

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Fright Nights at the PNE is a Halloween-themed experience with haunted houses, rides, creepy décor, and live performances. Recommended for those 13 years and older.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Fashion Fictions exhibition, running until October 9 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, explores the increasing influence of research-based, materially driven practices on the global fashion scene.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the 42nd annual Vancouver International Film Festival features over 140 films, 100 shorts, live performances, talks, conferences, and other events celebrating film and film culture. Running until October 8 at various Vancouver venues.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company and Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre present performances of the musical comedy Little Shop of Horrors, based on the film by Roger Corman, at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage until October 8. “Feed me, Seymour!”

SATURDAY: British prog-rock, art-pop, and worldbeat singer and songwriter Peter Gabriel, formerly of Genesis, plays Rogers Arena. Bet he does “Big Time”.

Brass Camel plays the Biltmore

SATURDAY: Vancouver’s rocking prog-funk quintet Brass Camel plays the Biltmore Cabaret, with guests Apollo Suns from Winnipeg.
