Monsters of Schlock are at the Rio

FRIDAY: local musicians JP Maurice, Parker Bosley, Dicky Neptune, Daniel James, and Adam Wazonek perform the Let It Be album in its entirety at Beatles Tribute LIVE at Blue Light Studio.

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 slasher flick, Friday the 13th. Kevin Bacon gets it good.

FRIDAY: Heart cofounder and lead vocalist Ann Wilson performs with her current band Tripsitter at Hard Rock Casino Vancouver. Here’s my interview with Ann Wilson from 1985.

FRIDAY: Alex Mackenzie’s Hungry For Laughs Comedy Tour at the Vogue Theatre features standup comedy by Mackenzie, Ivan Decker, Simon King, and Wes Barker, plus foot archery by Orissa Kelly. Proceeds go to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Sarah Chang performs at the Orpheum

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: maestra Anna Rakitina joins the Vancouver Symphony and Korean-American violinist Sarah Chang in a program at the Orpheum Theatre that features Bruch’s First Violin Concerto.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Highway 62 Re-imagined at Kay Meek Arts Centre features a Steve Dawson-led ensemble composed of Barney Bentall, John Boutté, Jim Byrnes, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Ndidi Onukwulu, Dawn Pemberton, Suzie Ungerleider, Joachim Cooder, and Maya de Vitry celebrating Bob Dylan’s iconic album. FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Fright Nights at the PNE is a Halloween-themed experience with haunted houses, rides, creepy décor, and live performances. Recommended for those 13 years and older.

SATURDAY: Canadian comedy madmen The Great Orbax and Sweet Pepper Klopek, aka The Monsters of Schlock, bring their stunt-filled, extreme circus sideshow to the Rio Theatre.

SATURDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director David Lynch’s acclaimed 1980 drama The Elephant Man, starring John Hurt as the severely deformed Joseph “John” Merrick.

ZZ Top plays Abbotsford Centre

SATURDAY: legendary Texas blues-rockers ZZ Top play the Abbotsford Centre, with guest Cory Marks. Here’s my interview with Billy Gibbons from 1994.

SATURDAY: Ontario punk-pop trio the Penske File plays LanaLou’s, with local guests Russian Tim and Pavel Bures.

SATURDAY: California indie-folk/Americana duo Milk Carton Kids, composed of singer-guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, plays the Vogue Theatre.

SATURDAY: local funk-fusion quintet Blues Hoodoo–composed of guitarist Konrad Breuers, keyboardist Stu “Stubop” Young, saxophonist Ian Putz, bassist Shawn Stewart, and drummer Ron Wells–plays Langley’s Bez Arts Hub.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: the New West Cultural Crawl is an annual arts and culture festival that celebrates the work of professional and emerging New Westminster artists at various local studios and galleries.

Måneskin plays the DMTSC

SUNDAY: Italian rock quartet Måneskin plays the Douglas Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, showcasing tunes from its latest album, Rush!
