MONDAY: American filmmaker and pop-culture icon John Waters performs his new spoken-word show Devil’s Advocate at the Rio Theatre. Please note: no videotaping, audio taping, or photography of any kind permitted during the performance. SOLD OUT. Snooze ya lose.

MONDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of an extended, 4K restoration of Italian director Dario Argento’s seminal 1975 giallo, Deep Red, starring David Hemmings as a jazz pianist who becomes enmeshed in a murder investigation.

MONDAY AND TUESDAY: Fright Nights at the PNE is a Halloween-themed experience with haunted houses, rides, creepy décor, and live performances. Recommended for those 13 years and older.

Rocky Horror screens at the Rio

MONDAY AND TUESDAY: screenings at the Rio Theatre of director Jim Sharman’s 1975 rock musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N. Furter. Here’s my interview with Tim Curry from 1990.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: the annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival features music, theatre, literary events, film, dance, forums, workshops, gallery exhibits, art talks, and history walks. Running until November 5 at various DTES locations.

TUESDAY: 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director William Friedkin’s horror classic The Exorcist, starring Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, and Linda Blair. Here’s my interview with Max von Sydow from 1993.

TUESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Nashville Predators in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

Dr. Gabor Maté is at the Playhouse

WEDNESDAY: physician and author Dr. Gabor Maté appears at a screening at the Vancouver Playhouse of the documentary The Wisdom of Trauma, in which he unveils how trauma shapes our lives, influences our relationships, and affects our perceptions of the world. SOLD OUT.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Cirque du Soleil presents its production of Kooza, a 125-minute acrobatics/circus show exploring themes of fear, identity, recognition, and power. Running until December 31 under the Big Top at Concord Pacific Place.

THURSDAY: veteran Vancouver blues musician, businessman, and promoter Dave Chisholm performs an evening of standup comedy at Leap Creative Studio, accompanied by pianist Dave Webb and bassist Bruce Morrison. Here’s my interview with Dave Chisholm from 1984.

THURSDAY TO FRIDAY: Ballet BC opens its 2023/24 season at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with a program that includes Experience Enemy in the Figure from William Forsythe, a new creation from Stephen Shropshire, and Shahar Binyamini’s BOLERO X.

Clearcut screens at the Cinematheque

FRIDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director Ryszard Bugajski’s uncompromising 1991 thriller Clearcut, starring Graham Greene as militant Indigenous activist Arthur. Event includes an introduction by local film and music writer Allan MacInnis and a post-screening Q&A with Clearcut composer Shane Harvey, with 50% of ticket proceeds benefiting the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources.

FRIDAY: Canadian comedian Shaun Majumder performs an evening of standup at the Rio Theatre as part of The Love Tour. CANCELLED.

FRIDAY: Otto Tausk conducts the Vancouver Symphony in a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem at the Orpheum Theatre.

Opera screens at the VIFF Centre

FRIDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of Italian writer-director Dario Argento‘s 1987 giallo slasher film Opera, about a young soprano who becomes involved in a series of murders being committed by a masked assailant inside an opera house.
