Rocky Horror screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Jim Sharman’s 1975 musical-comedy The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Here’s my interview with Tim Curry from 1990.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

Ring of Fire runs at Granville Island Stage
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash is featured in Ring of Fire, a theatrical concert created by Richard Maltby, Jr. that delves into the heart of Cash’s music, running until August 11 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Playland features midway games, attractions like the Haunted Mansion and Sweet Escape Mini Golf, food options, and numerous rides, including the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt. Playland runs until August 16 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis is an exhibition of 17 self-portraits by photographer Martine Gutierrez, running until September 29 at the Polygon Gallery.

School of Rock runs in Stanley Park
FRIDAY & SUNDAY: Theatre Under the Stars presents a performance in Stanley Park of the musical School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, with pre-show performances from School of Rock Vancouver.
SATURDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on Club Tijuana in a Leagues Cup soccer game at BC Place.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: the 48th annual Powell Street Festival celebrates Japanese-Canadian arts and culture with free music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film, literary events, and kids’ activities at Oppenheimer Park.

The Pride Parade hits downtown
SUNDAY: the Vancouver Pride Parade, featuring over 100 local groups, non-profit organizations, and businesses showcasing their support for 2SLGBTQAI+ communities, takes place in downtown Vancouver.
