MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAYEmily Carr: A Room of Her Ownrunning until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the Arts Club Theatre presents performances at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage until October 27 of Jersey Boys, a musical that tells the story of New Jersey hitmakers Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Electric Lady Studios screens at the VIFF Centre

TUESDAY & FRIDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision, director John McDermott’s new documentary about the New York City recording facility commissioned by Jimi Hendrix in 1968.

WEDNESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Calgary Flames in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

WEDNESDAY: Scott Smith’s Adventures in Pedal Steel at the Painted Ship is a celebration of the music of the 2000s featuring Smith’s pedal-steel licks and performances by guest artists Suzie Ungerleider, Emmett Jerome, Jessicka, Rich Hope, and Brad Ferguson.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: Fright Nights features eight haunted houses, wandering scare artists, over 15 midway rides, and spooky foods, running until October 31 on select nights at the PNE Grounds (Hastings and Windermere).

The Flyers are in town

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Philadelphia Flyers in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

FRIDAY: Vancouver guitar-rockers 54-40, featuring vocalist Neil Osborne, play the first of two nights at the Commodore Ballroom, with guests Limblifter. Here’s my interviews with Neil Osborne and Limblifter’s Ryan Dahle from 2000.

FRIDAY: Sean O’Loughlin conducts the Vancouver Symphony in Revolution: The Music of the Beatles, a symphonic tribute to the Fab Four, at the Orpheum Theatre.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: late-night 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of a remastered version of Tobe Hooper’s influential horror flick The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, starring Marilyn Burns and Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface.
