Inferno screens at the Cinematheque

FRIDAY: North Carolina indie-folk band Hiss Golden Messenger plays the Hollywood Theatre.

FRIDAY: The Charm Offensive Tour is an evening of standup comedy at Rogers Arena featuring Australia’s Jim Jefferies and Britain’s Jimmy Carr.

FRIDAY: blues-roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Brandon Isaak performs at Blue Frog Studios with a band composed of keyboardist Mike Kalanj, upright bassist Pat Darcus, and drummer Chris “The Wrist” Nordquist. Here’s the interview I did with Brandon Isaak back in 2002 when he was in the Twisters.

The Nightmare Before Christmas screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: afternoon screening at the Rio Theatre of director Henry Selick’s 1993 stop-motion animation classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Writers Fest explores the power of storytelling through dozens of events with local and international authors at various Vancouver venues. Writers taking part include Caroline Adderson, Roddy Doyle, Drew Hayden Taylor, John Vaillant, Andrey Kurkov, Aislinn Hunter, and Elamin Abdelmahmoud.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: performances at the Metro Theatre until November 2 of Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of novelist Susan Hill’s ghost story The Woman in Black, starring and directed by Bernard Cuffling.

Echo runs at Concord Pacific Place

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Cirque du Soleil‘s Echo, running to January 5 at Concord Pacific Place, combines poetry, stagecraft, acrobatics, and technology to explores the delicate balance between people, animals, and the world.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Fright Nights features eight haunted houses, wandering scare artists, over 15 midway rides, and spooky foods, running until October 31 on select nights at the PNE Grounds (Hastings and Windermere).

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Horror Show Film Festival at Cineplex International Village includes short films and screenings of the features Never Hike Alone 2 (Fri.), All the Lost Ones and Scared Shitless (Sat.), and Altona (Sun.).

SATURDAY: Canadian blues-rocker JW-Jones plays tunes from latest album Everything Now at White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios.

The Penguins are in town

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on Sid the Kid and the Pittsburgh Penguins in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

SATURDAY: Seattle psych-funk septet Polyrhythmics blends elements of R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat at the Rickshaw Theatre.

SATURDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director Dario Argento’s baroque 1980 horror classic Inferno. In Italian and Latin with English subtitles.

SUNDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of The Etiquette of Dying, composer/guitarist Ron Samworth and visual artist Melissa Hubert’s dreamy collaboration that creates a space for dialogue on death and dying.

Girlschool plays the Rickshaw

SUNDAY: ’80s metal quartet Girlschool, featuring original members Kim McAuliffe and Denise Dufort, plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Alcatrazz and Lillian Axe.
