Long John Baldry’s wicked sense of humour recalled by former stage manager

By Steve Newton

I heard a pretty funny musician joke the other day.

I came across it on the Facebook group Vancouver Rock Groups from the ’60s to the ’80s, where it was included in the comments on a blog I posted there about local blues legend Long John Baldry.

In response to a comment from veteran Vancouver musician Marc LaFrance, who’d mentioned that he played and sang on a couple of Baldry’s albums, group member Les Doiron–who had stage-managed some Baldry shows–recalled how Baldry and Powder Blues frontman Tom Lavin had joked around with each other. Apparently Lavin would call his blues-lovin’ buddy “Bald John Laundry”.

According to Doiron–who is currently the vice-president with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council in Port Alberni–Baldry once asked Lavin: “What’s the difference between a moose and the Powder Blues Band? A moose has the horns up front and the asshole in the rear.”

That made me chuckle.

“His humor was truly amazing,” added Doiron, “his music legendary.”
