The Host screens at VIFF Centre

FRIDAY: Vancouver sextet Petunia & the Vipers combines elements of country, western swing, Mexicana, French cabaret, ragtime, rockabilly, jazz, punk, and folk at West Vancouver’s Kay Meek Centre.

FRIDAY:  Italian conductor and pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell joins the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum Theatre for a program that includes Bartók’s Divertimento for Strings and Schubert’s Third Symphony.

FRIDAY: 11-piece Vancouver tribute band Steelin’ in the Years plays the music of Steely Dan at the Rickshaw Theatre.

Mac and Conger speak at the Revue Stage

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Writers Fest presents New York Times technology reporters Kate Conger and Ryan Mac discussing their book Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter with journalist Kathryn Gretsinger at the Revue Stage on Granville Island.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báezorganized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: The Lind Biennial, running until February 2 at Polygon Gallery, is a showcase of new work by the finalists of the Philip B. Lind Prize for Emerging Artists. Exhibiting artists include Mena El Shazly, Karice Mitchell, Dion Smith-Dokkie, Parumveer Walia, and Casey Wei.

The Oilers are in town

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

SATURDAY: Band Together is a fundraiser for BC Children’s Hospital at the Rickshaw Theatre featuring performances by headliner Brass Camel, Space Queen, BADMNY, Hyaenas, Cat Madden, and the Lunchtime Band.

SATURDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of director Bong Joon-Ho’s satirical 2006 monster movie The Host, the most successful Korean film ever made. In English and Korean with English subtitles.

The Stand screening at the Rio is CANCELLED

SUNDAY: Canadian theatrical premiere screening at the Rio Theatre of Stephen King‘s four-part 1994 mini-series The Stand, featuring a live Q&A with director Mick Garris. CANCELLED.
