MONDAY: Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica–composed of cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso–performs the music of Metallica at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, with guest Nita Strauss.
MONDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of Japanese writer-director Kiyoshi Kurosawa‘s 1997 neo-noir psychological horror film Cure, about a detective investigating a string of shocking, seemingly unmotivated murders. In Japanese with English subtitles.
MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báez, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin plays the BlueShore
TUESDAY: Swiss prog-jazz quartet Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin mixes funk, new classical music, and elements of Japanese ritual music at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: xʷəlməxʷ child, running until May 25 at North Vancouver’s Polygon Gallery, features Manuel Axel Strain‘s figurative paintings, transformed into pictographs and set against photographic murals.
THURSDAY: Santa Cruz Americana trio The Devil Makes Three blends folk, bluegrass, old time, country, blues, jazz, punk, and ragtime music at the Commodore Ballroom, with guests Bridge City Sinners.

Jon Spencer plays the Rickshaw
THURSDAY: American garage-rocker Jon Spencer, best known for his work with Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, Heavy Trash, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, plays the Rickshaw Theatre. Here’s my interview with Jon Spencer from 2004.
FRIDAY: East Van Mardi Gras at the Rickshaw Theatre features performances by Grateful Dead tribute band GD/BC, nine-piece group the Big Easy Funk Ensemble, and guests Nuvo Zydeco.
FRIDAY: American rapper Tyler, the Creator plays Rogers Arena as part of his Chromakopia World Tour, with guests Lil Yachty and Paris Texas.
