Phenomena screens at the Rio

MONDAY: Vancouver sextet Petunia & the Vipers combines elements of country, western swing, Mexicana, French cabaret, ragtime, rockabilly, jazz, punk, and folk at the Princeton Pub & Grill.
MONDAY TO FRIDAY: The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” exhibition, running until June 22 at 1 Alexander Street, features over 200 prints, photos, sculptures, installations, and murals by world-famous street artist Banksy.
TUESDAY: Kris Schulz, Senny, and Don Alder play a fundraiser for the Empower Through Music Society at Stanley Park’s Vancouver Rowing Club. Here’s my interview with Don Alder from 2012.

Ran screens at the Cinematheque
WEDNESDAY: 40th anniversary screening at the Cinematheque of Ran, director Akira Kurosawa’s epic reworking of Shakespeare’s King Lear. In Japanese with English subtitles.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Canadian standup and improvisational comedian Colin Mochrie, costar of TV’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?, performs five shows at the Improv Centre on Granville Island. SOLD OUT.
THURSDAY: veteran Winnipeg blues guitarist-vocalist and songwriter Brent Parkin performs with his band the Stingers at Frankie’s Jazz. Here’s my interview with Brent Parkin from 2003.

Lara Beitz performs at Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: American standup comedian Lara Beitz performs the first two nights of her four-night stand at Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy in New Westminster.
FRIDAY: music director Otto Tausk leads the Vancouver Symphony in a program that includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and the North American premiere of Danish composer Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen’s Violin Concerto at the Orpheum Theatre.
FRIDAY: late-night 40th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of the original Italian cut of director Dario Argento’s horror flick Phenomena, starring Jennifer Connelly as a young girl whose ability to communicate with insects might help solve a string of murders.

Peach Pit plays Deer Lake Park
FRIDAY: Vancouver indie-pop quartet Peach Pit and American singer-songwriter Briston Maroney play Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park on their Long Hair, Long Life Tour, with guests Bnny.
