Rocky Horror screens at the Rio

MONDAY: alt-rock band Garbage, featuring vocalist Shirley Manson, plays tunes from new album Let All That We Imagine Be the Light at the Orpheum Theatre, with guests Starcrawler. Here’s my interview with Shirley Manson from 1996.

MONDAY & WEDNESDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of Israel Palestine on Swedish TV 1958-1989, in which filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson weaves together footage to tell the story of the rise of the Israeli state and the Palestinian struggle for self-determination–as seen by Swedish media.

WEDNESDAY: Vancouver singer-songwriter Daryl Burgess performs two sets of original music at the WISE Hall, including performances with his ’80s band the Rhythm Snakes, the Latter Day Snakes, and Earth Wind & Choir.

Misery at the Evergreen Cultural Centre

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Stage 43 Theatrical Society presents playwright William Goldman’s adaptation of Misery, Stephen King’s novel about a crazed fan who keeps her favourite novelist captive, running until October 25 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Fright Nights, which features eight haunted houses, wandering scare artists, over 15 midway rides, and spooky foods, runs until October 31 on select nights at the PNE Grounds (Hastings and Windermere).

THURSDAY: Canadian indie-folk band the Great Lake Swimmers and Canadian alt-country trio Elliott Brood play the Biltmore Cabaret on the Ballads and Badlands Tour.

Deep Dark Woods plays the Fox

FRIDAY: Saskatoon alt-country band the Deep Dark Woods, featuring singer-guitarist and founding member Ryan Boldt, plays tunes from new album The Circle Remains at the Fox Cabaret, with guest Bob Sumner. Here’s my interview with Ryan Boldt from 2008.

FRIDAY: late-night 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director Jim Sharman’s campy musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry as mad scientist and sweet transvestite Dr. Frank N. Furter. Here’s my interview with Tim Curry from 1990.

FRIDAY: Metro Vancouver alt-rock singer-songwriter Matthew Good and his band perform hits from the past and tunes from his latest recording Zero Hours at the Commodore Ballroom, with coheadliners I Mother Earth from Toronto.
