FRIDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director Ringo Lam‘s influential 1987 heist film City on Fire, starring Chow Yun-fat as an undercover cop who infiltrates a syndicate of jewelry thieves.

FRIDAY: the Paul Pigat Trio–composed of guitarist-vocalist Paul Pigat, violinist Cameron Wilson, and bassist Brent Gubbles–performs an evening of traditional swing at Frankie’s Jazz. Here’s my interview with Paul Pigat from 2021.

FRIDAY: 40th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of legendary horror director George A. Romero‘s gruesome zombie classic Day of the Dead.

Allmost Brothers play the Rickshaw

FRIDAY: Allman Brothers tribute band the Allmost Brothers Band, featuring guitarists Todd Taylor and Johannes Grames, plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Roll Um Easy (tribute to Little Feat featuring Tom Taylor). Here’s my review of the Allmost Brothers Band from January.

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Christmas Tree Lighting is a family-oriented event in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery featuring live entertainment, free hot chocolate, and a visit from Santa.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: A Wonderheads Christmas Carol, running until December 14 at the Arts Club’s BMO Theatre Centre, is a wordless reimagining of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, featuring 10-foot tall puppets, incredible masks, and an original score.

Green Room screens at the Rio

SUNDAY: 10th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of Green Room, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier‘s thriller about a punk band that runs afoul of murderous neo-Nazis, with Saulnier taking part in a live Q&A.

SUNDAY: the Vancouver Vinyl Record Show at Heritage Hall features vendors selling LPs, 45s, CDs, posters, and music memorabilia.

SUNDAY: 25th anniversary screening at the VIFF Centre of the Coen brothers’ Homeric comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, with a live performance by local bluegrass band the Soda Crackers.

Stick Men play the Rickshaw

SUNDAY: prog-rock trio Stick Men–composed of Chapman Stick player Tony Levin, drummer Pat Mastelotto, and touch guitarist Markus Reuter–plays the Rickshaw Theatre.
