Aspiring skinbashers with dreams of being the next Neil Peart may have abandoned all hope after seeing the Rush drummer’s performance on Late Night With David Letterman last week. But fret freaks who’ve always wondered how the guitarists in Thin Lizzy made their magic can see numerous secrets revealed in a new DVD just released by Lick Library.
In Learn to Play Thin Lizzy: The Solos, guitarist, tutor, and Lick Library cofounder Stuart Bull lays out note-for-note the solos in five Lizzy classics: “Still In Love With You”, “Don’t Believe a Word”, “Waiting for an Alibi”, “Whiskey In the Jar”, and “Dancing in the Moonlight.”
Accompanying the DVD is a CD with jam tracks for each solo set at three different tempos, so you can practice them at your own pace, steadily building up to full speed.
There are more than enough tasty licks on those five tunes to keep any budding Gorham or Robertson busy for some time, but it’s a bit of a bummer that they didn’t include the solos from “Cowboy Song” as well. I wouldn’t mind seeing how the Lizzy pickers crafted those swell guitar wipeouts on “Opium Trail” either.
