The music world was shocked last year when, on February 6, word spread that Irish guitar legend Gary Moore had suddenly passed away while holidaying at a luxury resort in Spain. For some, it was bad news on a par with the tragic death of Jimi Hendrix, as both were astounding players who’d brilliantly melded a deep love of blues with heavily amped hard-rock sensibilities.

But now it looks like devotees of both artists have something to be psyched about, as Eagle Rock Entertainment announced today that on September 25 it will release Blues for Jimi, a concert featuring Moore playing 12 of Hendrix’s most famous songs.

Recorded on October 25, 2007, at the London Hippodrome, the CD, DVD, and Blu-ray title will see Moore going to town on such deathless Hendrix gems as “Purple Haze”, “Red House”, “Hey Joe”, and, of course, “Voodoo Child (Slight Return”).

Moore will mainly be accompanied by bassist Dave Bronze and drummer Darrin Mooney, but on three tracks he’ll be joined by former Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell–who passed away the following year at age 61–and bassist Billy Cox.

In the press release issued today, Eagle Rock describes Blues for Jimi as “a stunning tribute from one master guitarist to another”, and you sure won’t get any arguments about that from us.
