That time I called Roy Buchanan up at his house and he raved about his new Bluesmaster guitar

By Steve Newton

Man, I sure have been lucky as far as interviewing great guitarists go. Sometimes–in the case of guys like Joe Satriani, Buddy Guy, Dickey Betts, and Joe Bonamassa–I get to interview them a bunch of times.

Other times–with deceased legends like Link Wray, Albert King, Gary Moore, and Danny Gatton–I consider myself lucky to have chatted with them just once.

Roy Buchanan is one of the long-gone greats that I managed to interview a couple of times, the first time in 1986, and the second in April of 1988, four months before he died under mysterious circumstances in a Virginia jail cell.

At the time of our last talk Buchanan was involved with the marketing of his signature Bluesmaster guitar, which he started raving about soon after answering my call.
