That time Warren Haynes told me how he became an Allman Brother

By Steve Newton

One of my favourite things about being a rock writer is getting to chat with musicians like Warren Haynes. He’s one helluva singer and songwriter, in my book, and of course his guitar playing just freakin’ rules.

I’ve been lucky enough to have interviewed Haynes six times so far, the first being back in 1994, when he was coming to Vancouver as a member of the Allman Brothers Band.

The Allmans were touring behind their latest album, Where It All Begins, so I called Warren up at the band’s office in New York and started the conversation by asking how he came to join the band. Turns out he’d been a fan since his older brothers turned him onto the ABB at the age of nine.
