Today I received a press release from Kayos Productions regarding an upcoming CD/DVD by one of my all-time favourite bands.
The promo material started off like this: “With their driving hooks, twin lead guitars, lyrics saturated in working-class lore, and the charismatic presence of singer, songwriter, and bassist Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy are undeniably one of the most influential bands in rock ‘n’ roll.”
Hey, tell me something I don’t know.
I’ve been a massive fan of Lizzy since I first scored my copy of Vagabonds of the Western World. I saw them twice with Phil Lynott, and the second time, in 1978, I got invited backstage by Scott Gorham.
In their prime, Thin Lizzy were as good as it gets. So nobody has to tell me how influential they are.
But I’m still kinda psyched about today’s news, which reported that on June 24 Mercury Studios will release the 2020 documentary Phil Lynott Songs For While I’m Away along with Thin Lizzy The Boys Are Back In Town Live At The Sydney Opera House October 1978. The set will be available as either two DVDs and a CD, or as a Blu-ray, DVD, and CD (with the Lynott documentary on Blu-ray).
The best news is that the concert will feature five additional songs from the Sydney set that have never been previously released, including “Warriors”, “Don’t Believe a Word”, “Still In Love With You”, “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed”, and “Suicide”.
I for one can’t wait to hear Gorham and Gary Moore rip up the frets on “Warrior”–and those other four tracks too!
The only bummer about the live recording is that Mark Nauseef was on drums instead of Lizzy mainstay Brian Downey, but from all accounts he did a decent job. Pre-order the package here and judge for yourself.
