Vancouver-based guitarist Dave Martone knows wicked guitar players. As well as having collaborated and toured with his good friend Joe Satriani over the years, Martone has managed to work with such acclaimed six-string slingers as Yngwie Malmsteen, Jennifer Batten, Tosin Abasi, Greg Howe, Paul Gilbert, and Marty Friedman.
But when I interviewed Martone in November of 2020, another legendary picker was foremost on his mind.
The previous month Eddie Van Halen had passed away, so of course I asked Martone if Eddie had been a big influence on his playing.
I expected that he was, but I didn’t realize how deeply indebted Martone felt toward EVH, or how hard his death had hit him.
