Hump! Fest is at the Rio

FRIDAY: the Sister Jazz Orchestra, an 18-woman jazz ensemble showcasing Vancouver’s top female jazz artists, performs at the BlueShore at CapU in celebration of International Women’s Day. Program features trombonist Audrey Ochoa and opening act NiteCap.

FRIDAY: Journeyman Productions presents Speak No Evil, a night of instrumental metal featuring Vessel, Sideon, Zack Brannon, and the Bifurcated at Bully’s Studios in New Westminster.

FRIDAY: Vancouver roots trio Cannery Row–composed of Gary Comeau, Tim Hearsey, and Chris Nordquist–performs a mix of blues, Latin, zydeco, jazz, Cajun, country, and rock ‘n roll at Guilt and Co.

Walter Trout plays the York Theatre

FRIDAY: American blues-rock guitarist Walter Trout, former member of Canned Heat and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, plays the York Theatre, with guest David Gogo from Nanaimo.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Dan Savage’s HUMP! Film Festival, a lovingly curated festival of short erotic films, runs at the Rio Theatre. The program is a cornucopia of body types, shapes, ages, colors, sexualities, genders, kinks, and fetishes—all united by a shared spirit of sex-positivity.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: music director Otto Tausk leads the Vancouver Symphony in performances of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring at the Orpheum Theatre and Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre.

Scream VI screens at the Twilight Drive-in

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: drive-in horror double-bill at Langley’s Twilight Drive-in Theatre features screenings of the new fright flicks Scream VI and M3GAN.

SATURDAY: Joe Rotundo & the Interstellar Riders and the Reviberators perform A Night of Surf Music at the new Kitsilano neighbourhood pub The Painted Ship.

SUNDAY: American singer-songwriter Pokey LaFarge performs a mix of Americana, early jazz, ragtime, country blues, Western swing, Vaudeville, and Appalachian folk at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Cicada Rhythm.

The Rio hosts an Oscar party

SUNDAY: the Rio Theatre‘s Oscar party features the live televised broadcast of the 95th annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Red carpet coverage starts at 3:30 pm.
