FRIDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of director John Landis’s 1981 horror-comedy An American Werewolf in London as part of the Back to the 80s film series. That transformation scene is wild!

FRIDAY: Vancouver blues legend Jim Byrnes leads his band in the first of two nights at White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios. That dude’s gotta lotta soul.

FRIDAY: gangsta-rap pioneer Snoop Dogg plays Rogers Arena with a lineup that includes Wiz Khalifa, Too $hort, Warren G, Berner, and DJ Drama. There will be weed.

FRIDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of directors Joel and Ethan Coen’s Oscar-winning adaptation of the late Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel. No Country For Old Men, starring Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem. There will be blood.

Ali Wong plays the Queen E

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: American comedian and actress Ali Wong, co-star of the Netflix series Beef, performs three nights of standup at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. You should binge on Beef.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents the musical Million Dollar Quartet— which depicts the famed 1956 jam session between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins–at the Granville Island Stage. Wear your blue suede shoes.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the 35th annual Dancing on the Edge Festival, running to July 15 at various Vancouver venues, features over 30 performances by top Canadian dance artists. Get yer dance on!

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, about the pop phenomenon’s rise to stardom, running to August 6 at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. You might feel the earth move under your feet.

The VSO plays Sunset Beach

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Symphony, led by music director Otto Tausk, performs a free concert at Sunset Beach Park, featuring selections from the William Tell Overture and Max Richter’s Four Seasons Recomposed, with a prelude performance by the VSO School of Music’s Sinfonietta.

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer action at BC Place.

SATURDAY: the Khatsahlano Street Festival–a free outdoor music event curated by Zulu Records and featuring performances by dozens of B.C. acts–takes place on West Fourth Avenue from Burrard to MacDonald. Performers include Pink Mountaintops, Yukon Blonde, Desiree Dawson, Louise Burns, Skye Wallace, Noble Son, and saltspringunderground. Newtification: one of my fave B.C. writers, Adrian “Mad” Mack, plays drums in saltspringunderground.

Mean Streets screens at the Rio

SATURDAY: 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of Martin Scorsese’s gritty crime drama, Mean Streets, starring Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.

SUNDAY: the BC Lions take on the Montreal Alouettes in Canadian Football League action at BC Place.
