The Road Warrior screens at VIFF Centre

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic 1981 action movie The Road Warrior, starring Mel Gibson as “Mad” Max Rockatansky.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, about the pop phenomenon’s rise to stardom, running to August 6 at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. You might feel the earth move under your feet.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents the musical Million Dollar Quartet— which depicts the famed 1956 jam session between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins–at the Granville Island Stage. Wear your blue suede shoes.

The VSO performs at Deer Lake Park

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Symphony performs a free outdoor concert at Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park, featuring music by Rossini, Bizet, Elgar, Saint-Saëns, and John Williams, with prelude performance by Azalea Chinese Music Ensemble.

SATURDAY: ’80s dance-pop superstar Madonna plays Rogers Arena as part of her Celebration Tour. CANCELLED.

SUNDAY: Vancouver trio Rollin’ and Tumblin’ plays an electric/eclectic blend of old-school blues and funky instrumentals by T-Bone Walker, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, and Earl Hooker at Guilt and Co.

The Wicker Man screens at the Rio

SUNDAY: 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of a 4K restoration of director Robin Hardy’s folk-horror classic The Wicker Man, starring Edward Woodward stars as a puritanical, staunchly Christian police officer investigating the disappearance of a young girl on a secluded Scottish Island.
