Pete n’ Dave in ’87
By Steve Newton
The vast majority of my interviews with rock legends have been over the phone. The idea is to catch the artist on tour when they’re headed to town and get the story published in time to help sell some tickets–and maybe a few albums to boot.
But every once in a while I’d score in-person interviews, like the one that went down on August 15, 1987.
That was the day that David Bowie’s massive Glass Spider Tour hit Vancouver for a show at BC Place Stadium.
To my eternal regret, I wasn’t able to secure an interview with the Thin White Duke himself, but I was totally okay with the next best thing: seventies pop superstar and Humble Pie guitar hero Peter Frampton.
A few hours before the gig I sat down with the blonde rocker in a room at the Four Seasons Hotel and asked him about his career in music and his current tour with Bowie–who it turns out was a close childhood friend.
Frampton seemed like a very nice, unassuming chap. He was kind enough to sign the 13th fret of the Ear of Newt autographed guitar.
