Friday the 13th screens at the Rio

MONDAY: last day to see the Vancouver Art Gallery‘s Fashion Fictions exhibition, which explores the increasing influence of research-based, materially driven practices on the global fashion scene.

MONDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director David Lynch’s acclaimed 1980 drama The Elephant Man, starring John Hurt as the severely deformed Joseph “John” Merrick.

TUESDAY: the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society presents the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at the Orpheum Theatre.

TUESDAY: Texas instrumental prog-rock band Polyphia–composed of guitarists Tim Henson and Scott LePage, bassist Clay Gober, and drummer Clay Aeschliman–plays the Vogue Theatre, with guests Domi and JD Beck.

The Vampire Circus comes to the BPAC

WEDNESDAY: the Vampire Circus is a 90-minute mix of circus cabaret and theatre at Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre that features acrobats, contortionists, jugglers, and clowns.

WEDNESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Edmonton Oilers in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

WEDNESDAY: Texas Americana musician Shakey Graves combines blues, folk, country, and rock and roll at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Samantha Bee plays the Queen E

THURSDAY: Canadian-American comedian Samantha Bee performs her Your Favourite Woman: The Joy of Sex Education show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

THURSDAY: Vancouver guitarist-vocalist and pedal-steel ace Scott Smith performs at a release party for his new album Lifeboat: Explorations in Pedal Steel at Tyrant Studios. Here’s my interview with Scott Smith from 2020.

FRIDAY:  local musicians JP Maurice, Parker Bosley, Dicky Neptune, Daniel James, and Adam Wazonek perform the Let It Be album in its entirety at Beatles Tribute LIVE at Blue Light Studio.

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 slasher flick, Friday the 13th. Kevin Bacon gets it good.

Ann Wilson plays the Hard Rock

FRIDAY: Heart cofounder and lead vocalist Ann Wilson performs with her current band Tripsitter at Hard Rock Casino Vancouver. Here’s my interview with Ann Wilson from 1985.

FRIDAY: Fright Nights at the PNE is a Halloween-themed experience with haunted houses, rides, creepy décor, and live performances. Recommended for those 13 years and older.

FRIDAY: Alex Mackenzie’s Hungry For Laughs Comedy Tour at the Vogue Theatre features standup comedy by Mackenzie, Ivan Decker, Simon King, and Wes Barker, plus foot archery by Orissa Kelly. Proceeds go to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Highway 62 is re-imagined at Kay Meek

FRIDAY: first show at Kay Meek Arts Centre of the the two-night Highway 62 Re-imagined, which  features a Steve Dawson-led ensemble composed of Barney Bentall, John Boutté, Jim Byrnes, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Ndidi Onukwulu, Dawn Pemberton, Suzie Ungerleider, Joachim Cooder, and Maya de Vitry celebrating Bob Dylan’s iconic album.
