FRIDAY: the BC Lions take on the Calgary Stampeders in Canadian Football League action at BC Place.
FRIDAY: the Rogue Folk Club presents Vancouver acoustic folk-roots quartet the Fugitives performing tunes from its new album No Help Coming at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James.
FRIDAY: opening day of the Vancouver Writers Fest features an evening with Scotiabank Giller Prize finalists Sarah Bernstein, Eleanor Catton, Kevin Chong, Dionne Irving, and CS Richardson at the Vancouver Playhouse.
FRIDAY: Vancouver blues legend and actor Jim Byrnes plays the Bez Arts Hub in Langley, accompanied by pianist Simon Kendall from Doug and the Slugs. Here’s my interview with Jim from 1985.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Fright Nights at the PNE is a Halloween-themed experience with haunted houses, rides, creepy décor, and live performances. Recommended for those 13 years and older.

Naomi Klein speaks at Chan Centre
SATURDAY: as part of the Vancouver Writers Fest, author Naomi Klein presents her new book, Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World–which combines elements of tragi-comic memoir, political reportage, and cultural analysis–at the Chan Centre.
SATURDAY: F**k Cancer 2 is a benefit concert at the Centre in Vancouver featuring performances by Colin James, Jeff Neill, Jim Byrnes, Lee Aaron, and current and former members of Loverboy, Chilliwack, Doug & the Slugs, Headpins, Powder Blues, Prism, Trooper, and Stonebolt. All proceeds support BC Cancer’s PROFYLE (Precision Oncology for Young People) Program.
SATURDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the L.A. Football Club in the final game of Major League Soccer regular season action at BC Place.

Rich Hope plays the Rio
SATURDAY: East Van Opry at the Rio Theatre celebrates “country” music East Van style, with performances by Rich Hope, Krystle Dos Santos, Leo D.E Johnson, the Mighty Teardrops, Jack & Elijah Garton, Shirley Gnome, Arsenic & Old Lace, Matt Cook-Contois, Sinéad X Sanders, Madelaine McCallum, Spank Williams, and the Royal Cajun Band. SATURDAY: Chest Fever, San Diego’s Robbie Robertson-approved tribute to The Band, plays the Rickshaw Theatre.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: Cirque du Soleil presents its production of Kooza, a 125-minute acrobatics/circus show exploring themes of fear, identity, recognition, and power. Running until December 31 under the Big Top at Concord Pacific Place.
SUNDAY: Canadian prog-metal band Protest The Hero plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Moon Tooth and the Callous Daoboys.

SUNDAY: Irish soul-folk singer-songwriter Hozier plays Rogers Arena as part of his Unreal Unearth Tour 2023, with guest Madison Cunningham.
