The Killer screens at VIFF Centre

FRIDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director Ryszard Bugajski’s uncompromising 1991 thriller Clearcut, starring Graham Greene as militant Indigenous activist Arthur.
FRIDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of Italian writer-director Dario Argento‘s 1987 giallo slasher film Opera, about a young soprano who becomes involved in a series of murders being committed by a masked assailant inside an opera house.
FRIDAY: the Rogue Folk Club presents Canadian folk singer-songwriter Connie Kaldor at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. SOLD OUT.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Ballet BC opens its 2023/24 season at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with a program that includes Experience Enemy in the Figure from William Forsythe, a new creation from Stephen Shropshire, and Shahar Binyamini’s BOLERO X.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Otto Tausk conducts the Vancouver Symphony in a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem at the Orpheum Theatre.

Elf: The Musical runs at the Stanley
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents Elf: The Musical, based on the 2003 Christmas comedy film Elf and starring Andrew McNee as Buddy the Elf. Running until December 31 at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival features music, theatre, literary events, film, dance, forums, workshops, gallery exhibits, art talks, and history walks. Running until November 5 at various DTES locations.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of Se7en and Fight Club director David Fincher’s new thriller, The Killer, about a hitman who finds himself on the receiving end of a termination contract.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the 27th edition of the Vancouver Asian Film Festival features both emerging and established Asian Canadian and Asian American writers, producers, and directors showcasing their latest work. Running until November 11 at various Vancouver locations.

Lumiere Festival is downtown
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Lumiere Festival features over 30 illuminated artworks and light-based projections, accompanied by live performances, at various downtown Vancouver locations.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Cirque du Soleil presents its production of Kooza, a 125-minute acrobatics/circus show exploring themes of fear, identity, recognition, and power. Running until December 31 under the Big Top at Concord Pacific Place.
SATURDAY: the BC Lions take on the Calgary Stampeders in a Canadian Football League division semi-final game at BC Place.
SATURDAY: April O’Peel curates a Burlesque and Variety Show at the Rio Theatre hosted by Gia Sangria and featuring performances by Batty Banks, Bella Bizarre, Can Can Classique, Clare Voyeur, Sailor Chubby Moon, Lady Blanche Bouvier, Portia Favro, Priscilla Cybn, Viktoria Court, Yuki, and Vixen Von Flex.
SATURDAY: American prog-metal quartet Baroness plays tunes from new album Stone at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Ken Mode from Winnipeg.

The Canucks play the Stars
SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Dallas Stars in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.
SATURDAY: Roundhouse Productions presents laser-video shows to the music of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Gorillaz, and Radiohead at the BCIT Planetarium.
SATURDAY: Billy Dixon and His Soul Train Express–composed of vocalist Dixon, guitarist Olaf deShield, keyboardist Peter Sweetzir, saxophonist Brock Miller, trumpeter Langston Raymond, bassist Graham Clark, and drummer Chris Hass–plays Frankie’s Jazz Club.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: Made in the 604 is a pop-Up market at Heritage Hall featuring the work of local artists, crafters, makers, and small businesses.
SUNDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Los Angeles Football Club in a Major League Soccer Cup playoff action at BC Place.
