FRIDAY: B.C. premiere screening at the Rio Theatre of writer/director/producer/star Tommy Wiseau’s 2023 horror-comedy Big Shark, with special introduction by Greg Sestero, co-star of Wiseau’s 2003 cult phenom The Room.

FRIDAY: comedic stunt magician and YouTuber Wes Barker performs at the Biltmore Cabaret.

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Rob Reiner’s 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel Misery, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates.

FRIDAY: Comedy Here Often? presents standup comedy by Arash NarchiRobert PengGina Harms, and headliner Cassidy Anhorn at 604 Studios.

FRIDAY: the Snowed in Comedy Tour features standup comedy by Erica Sigurdson, Pete Zedlacher, Dan Quinn, and Paul Myrehaug at the Vogue Theatre.

Brass Camel plays Blue Light Studios

FRIDAY: the Toddcast Podcast presents Blue Light Sessions, featuring performances by local prog-funk quartet Brass Camel and funk-rock trio BADMNY at Blue Light Studios.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Broadway Across Canada presents performances of Mean Girlsthe hit musical written by Tina Fey of TV’s Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the work of late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos is featured in the career retrospective Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, running until March of 2024 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Reclaim + Repair at Museum of Vancouver

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: 31 emerging and seasoned local designers and makers were selected to create 22 objects made from vintage mahogany for Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project, running until August 7 at the Museum of Vancouver.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival features innovative theatre, dance, music, mixed-media, circus, and installations at various Vancouver venues until February 4.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: guest conductor Nicolas Ellis leads the Vancouver Symphony and Macedonian pianist Simon Trpceski in a program at the Orpheum Theatre that includes Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto.

Israelism screens at the Rio

SATURDAY: the SFU Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies and  Independent Jewish Voices Vancouver present a screening at the Rio Theatre of Israelism, a new documentary that explores how Jewish attitudes towards Israel in regards to Palestine are dramatically changing. Event includes post-screening Q&A with filmmakers.

SATURDAY: Vancouver roots-rock quartet the Graham Brown Band plays the Princeton Pub. Here’s my interview with Graham Brown from 2022.

SATURDAY: the red-hot Vancouver Canucks take on the Columbus Blue Jackets in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

Sinéad X Sanders plays Guilt and Co.

SATURDAY: Vancouver roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Sinéad X Sanders performs tunes from her self-titled EP at Guilt and Co.

SATURDAY: Vancouver soul-folk/alt-rock singer-songwriter Ché Aimee Dorval performs tunes from her third album The Crown at the WISE Hall, with guests Post-Modern Connection.

SATURDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of French director Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 feature debut, Breathless, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. In French with English subtitles.

SUNDAY: Vinyl Swap at East Van’s Container Brewing will feature music spinning, craft beer, food, and album swapping of the vinyl variety.

Lydia Loveless plays the WISE Hall

SUNDAY: Ohio alt-country singer-songwriter Lydia Loveless plays the WISE Hall, with guest Jason Hawk Harris.
