That time Warren Haynes told me that the Marcus King Band was his favourite current band

I really admire Warren Haynes. I love everything about him: his singing, his songwriting, his guitar playing, his personality.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have interviewed Warren six times, the last time being back in 2017 when Gov’t Mule was touring behind its Revolution Come…Revolution Go album.

At one point in the conversation I asked him who he was listening to in his spare time, and he turned me on to someone I hadn’t heard before.

“Well you know there’s so much music from the past six or seven years that you could never discover even a fraction of it all,” he replied. “I listen to a lot of what I consider ‘comfort music’, you know: Otis Redding, and Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin and Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery and Albert King and Freddie King.

“But I’m into a lot of different music,” he added, “so I try to change it all the time. As far as new music that I’m digging, the Marcus King Band is my favourite current band.”

Having total faith in Warren Haynes’ taste in music, I went and checked out King’s album Carolina Confessions, and next thing you know it made my Top 10 Albums of 2018 list.

Thanks for the tip, Mr. Haynes!
