FRIDAY: L.A. alt-rock quartet Silversun Pickups play tunes from latest album Physical Thrills at the Commodore Ballroom.

FRIDAY: Salt Spring Island-based musician Harry Manx performs slide guitar-laced blues blended with Indian folk melodies at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. SOLD OUT. Here’s my interview with Manx from 2022.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: the Vancouver men’s choir Chor Leoni joins Montreal’s folk ensemble La Nef in The Return Voyage, a 75-minute program of sea songs and shanties at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: 31 emerging and seasoned local designers and makers were selected to create 22 objects made from vintage mahogany for Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project, running until August 7 at the Museum of Vancouver.

Alexandra Dariescu plays the Orpheum

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: pianist Alexandra Dariescu joins the Vancouver Symphony and guest conductor Shiyeon Sung for a performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major at the Orpheum Theatre.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Search Party presents the Western Canada premiere of Hannah Moscovitch’s Bunny, starring Emma Slipp as a woman who, armed only with Victorian literature and an unconventional upbringing, discovers the power of her own desire. Running until February 18 at Anvil Theatre.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the work of late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos is featured in the career retrospective Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, running until March of 2024 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

FRIDAY AND SUNDAY: Basically Good Media Lab and Emily Carr University of Art + Design present a screening at the Cinematheque of Goodbye to Language, Jean-Luc Goddard’s 2014 3D film about an extramarital affair, twice told with two sets of actors. In French with English subtitles, and featuring a video introduction by Toronto-based filmmaker Blake Williams, who specializes in stereoscopic media.

SATURDAY: Canadian indie-rock trio the Rural Alberta Advantage plays the Commodore Ballroom.

Marlon Wayans plays the Queen E

SATURDAY: American actor, director, writer, producer, and comedian Marlon Wayans performs standup at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre as part of the Just for Laughs Vancouver.

SATURDAY: Detroit psychobilly trio the Koffin Kats plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Hans Gruber and the Die Hards and the Fomites.

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Winnipeg Jets in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

SUNDAY: Vancouver ska-punk group Los Furios plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Cawama and the Dragstrip Devils, plus burlesque performances by Melody Mangler and Justine Sane.

SUNDAY: local blues quartet the Steve Kozak Band–featuring guitarist-vocalist Steve Kozak, keyboardist Peter Sweetzir, bassist Trevor Newman, and drummer Darrell Mayes–plays Frankie’s Jazz.

Le Vent du Nord plays Mel Lehan Hall

SUNDAY: CapU Global Roots and the Rogue Folk Club present Quebec folk quintet Le Vent du Nord at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. SOLD OUT.
