FRIDAY: Canadian folk singer-songwriter Roy Forbes, formerly known as Bim, performs songs from latest album Edge of Blue at White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Punkstravaganza VIII at the Rickshaw Theatre features performances by the Dreadnoughts, Balkan Shmalkan, and You Big Idiot (Friday); and the Dreadnoughts, Bridge City Sinners, and Staggers and Jaggs (Saturday).

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: American comedian, writer, actor, and TV host Hasan Minhaj performs his new standup comedy show Off With His Head at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Arts Umbrella Dance is at the Playhouse

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: the Arts Umbrella Dance Company presents Midseason, a program of works by choreographers Sidney Chuckas, William Forsythe, James Kudelka, Fernando Magadan, Emily Molnar, Christoph von Riedemann, and Lukas Timulak at the Vancouver Playhouse.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: 31 emerging and seasoned local designers and makers were selected to create 22 objects made from vintage mahogany for Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project, running until August 7 at the Museum of Vancouver.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the work of late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos is featured in the career retrospective Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, running until April 1 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Capitals are in town

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

SATURDAY: Canadian comedian, actor, and novelist Brent Butt performs an evening of standup at Maple Ridge’s ACT Arts Centre.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: the Vancouver Symphony presents a symphonic celebration of Disney music at the Orpheum Theatre, featuring material from Peter Pan, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Frozen, The Lion King, and Fantasia.

The Wilds is at Shadbolt Centre

SUNDAY: Victoria-based physical theatre company Wonderheads presents The Wilds, a wordless show featuring masks, puppetry, and music, at Burnaby’s Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
