On-Gaku: Our Sound screens at VIFF Centre

FRIDAY: Russian feminist protest and performance art/punk-rock group Pussy Riot performs at the Pearl, with guest Wait//Less.

FRIDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of director Robert Morgan’s psychological horror film Stopmotion, about a  stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother.

FRIDAY: Vancouver pianist/composer Sharon Minemoto and jazz vocalist Laura Crema perform the music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington at Frankie’s Jazz.

FRIDAY: Vancouver roots-rock sextet the Matinee plays tunes from new Steve Dawson-produced CD Change of Scene at Guilt and Co.

FRIDAY: Comedy Here Often? presents standup comedy by Kevin Von Helvete, Devin Alexander, and headliner Steev Letts at 604 Studios.

Velvet Terrorism at Polygon Gallery

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: 31 emerging and seasoned local designers and makers were selected to create 22 objects made from vintage mahogany for Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project, running until August 7 at the Museum of Vancouver.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the work of late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos is featured in the career retrospective Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, running until April 1 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

FRIDAY & SUNDAY: screenings at VIFF Centre of director Kenji Iwaisawa’s 2020 animated musical-comedy On-Gaku: Our Sound, about a trio of high school delinquents who decide they are destined for musical glory.

The Flames are in town

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Calgary Flames in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

SATURDAY: confessional folk-rock singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge performs with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre as part of her I’m Not Broken Tour.

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer action at BC Place Stadium.

SUNDAY: Vancouver blues guitarist-vocalist Steve Kozak leads his band, which includes keyboardist Peter Sweetzir, bassist Trevor Newman, and drummer Chris Nordquist–at Guilt and Co.

SUNDAY: Early Music Vancouver presents Handel: Hallelujah and Trumpets!, featuring Ensemble Caprice and Ensemble ArtChoral directed by Matthias Maute at the Chan Centre. There will be a pre-concert chat with Maute hosted by composer and writer David Gordon Duke.

Glitterfox plays the Biltmore

SUNDAY: Portland-based indie folk-rock quartet Glitterfox, led by married couple Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker, plays the Biltmore Cabaret, performing their latest tunes on the Kill Rock Stars label.
