MONDAY: American pop/R&B singer-songwriter and actor Justin Timberlake performs at Rogers Arena on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour.

MONDAY: the Invisible Orange presents Italian power metal quintet Metal Rose (“Diggy Diggy Hole”) at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Xandria from Germany.

Tony Wilson plays Guilt & Co.

MONDAY: jazz guitarist Tony Wilson performs with tenor saxophonist Dave Say, bassist Russell Sholberg, and drummer Nino Dipasquale at Guilt and Co.

MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: J.E.H. MacDonald? A Tangled Garden at the Vancouver Art Gallery until May 12 features 10 previously unknown painted sketches attributed to a founding member of the Group of Seven.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

The Predators are in town

TUESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Nashville Predators in the first round of the National Hockey League playoffs at Rogers Arena.

TUESDAY: Jason Bonham, son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, performs Led Zep tunes at the Orpheum Theatre, with guest Jager Henry. Here’s my interview with Jason Bonham from 1989.

WEDNESDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of Poor Things, director Yorgos Lanthimos’s fantastical tale of a young woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, starring Emma Stone in her Oscar-winning performance.

Wade Davis is at SFU

WEDNESDAY: the Vancouver Writers’ Festival presents a conversation with author and anthropology professor Wade Davis, who discusses his new book Beneath the Surface of Things at SFU’s Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema.

WEDNESDAY: Vancouver swamp-blues vocalist and harmonica player Shawn Hall, aka the Harpoonist, performs tunes from his new album Did We Come Here To Dance at the WISE Hall.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

Steve Burgess is at the VPL

THURSDAY: Vancouver writer and broadcaster Steve Burgess presents his new book, Reservations: The Pleasures and Perils of Travel, in conversation with local journalist Dana Gee at the Vancouver Public Library.

THURSDAY: Rising Stars of Jazz at the Vancouver Playhouse showcase four Vancouver School of Music jazz combos and its big band with special guest James Danderfer.

THURSDAY: MRG Live presents Australian blues-roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Kim Churchill at the Biltmore Cabaret. Here’s my interview with Kim Churchill from 2011.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: the DOXA Documentary Film Festival, running May 2 to 12, features film screenings, panel discussions, public forums, and educational programs at various Vancouver venues.

Terminal Station plays Frankie’s Jazz

FRIDAY: Vancouver blues-rock band Terminal Station, featuring singer-guitarist Scott Smith, plays Frankie’s Jazz. Here’s my interview with Scott Smith from 2020.

FRIDAY: Texas garage-punk quartet the Marked Men plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Needles//Pins, Long Knife, and No Brainer.

FRIDAY: conductor Vern Griffiths joins vocalist Myra Maud and the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum Theatre in a program of popular music from the 1920s, including “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “Mack the Knife,” and “St. Louis Blues.”

FRIDAY: blues-fusion quintet Blues Hoodoo—composed of guitarist Konrad Breuers, saxophonist Ian Putz, keyboardist Stuart “Stubop” Young, bassist Shawn Stewart, and drummer Ron Wells–plays Langley’s Bez Arts Hub, with guest vocalist Nadine States.
