FRIDAY: disco-influenced British indie-rock band Yard Act plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Font from Austin, Texas. SOLD OUT.
FRIDAY: Vancouver roots-rock group the Graham Brown Band, featuring former Brilliant Orange frontman Graham Brown, performs tunes from its latest album Spirit and Soul at the Princeton Pub.
Run Lola Run screens at the Rio
FRIDAY: 25th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of a 4K restoration of German director Tom Twyker’s hyperkinetic action thriller Run Lola Run.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: music director Otto Tausk leads the Vancouver Symphony in a program at the Orpheum Theatre that includes Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) and the overture from Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Canadian rock bands from the ’70s and ’80s, Streetheart and Honeymoon Suite, perform on double bills at Great Canadian Casino Vancouver on Friday and River Rock Casino on Saturday.
Velvet Terrorism ends at Polygon Gallery
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 9 at the Polygon Gallery.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: independent music festival Music Waste celebrates its 30th anniversary with performances by more than 70 bands at various Vancouver venues. Performers include Amanda Sum, Speedreader, Devours, Blackberry Wood, Apollo Ghosts, Dream Funeral, Future Star, Midnight News, Petaluna, Serengeti, Freak Dream, and Stephen Hamm: Theremin Man.
SATURDAY: Vancouver new-wave band from the ’80s, Images in Vogue, plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Combine the Victorious, Devours, and DJ Evilyn13. Here’s my 1983 article on Images in Vogue.
