Vancouver Folk Fest kicks off Friday

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, running until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.

School of Rock runs in Stanley Park

MONDAY, WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY: Theatre Under the Stars presents performances in Stanley Park of the musical School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, with pre-show performances from School of Rock Vancouver.

TUESDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director Alfred Hitchcock‘s 1945 psychological thriller Spellbound, starring Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck.

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash is featured in Ring of Fire, a theatrical concert created by Richard Maltby, Jr. that delves into the heart of Cash’s music, running until August 11 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage.

WEDNESDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer action at BC Place.

New ThunderVolt ride at Playland

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Playland features midway games, attractions like the Haunted Mansion and Sweet Escape Mini Golf, food options, and numerous rides, including the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt. Playland runs until August 16 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Spokane Chiefs in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

FRIDAY: the three-day Vancouver Folk Music Festival kicks off at Jericho Beach Park with mainstage performances by Dobet Gnahoré, Moontricks, Leif Vollebekk, and Māmā Mihirangi & The Māreikura.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Philip Kaufman’s 1978 horror remake Invasion of the Body Snatchers, starring the late Canadian acting great Donald Sutherland.
