MONDAY: Music on Main presents The Tempest Project, in which audiences are led through the Vancouver Playhouse on a roving, Shakespeare-inspired musical adventure under the direction of David Pay.

MONDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of It’s Such a Beautiful Day, Austin-based indie animator Don Hertzfeldt’s collection of three previously released shorts assembled into a single, seamless feature, along with the Vancouver premiere of his new short, ME.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, running until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.

Ring of Fire runs at Granville Island Stage

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash is featured in Ring of Fire, a theatrical concert created by Richard Maltby, Jr. that delves into the heart of Cash’s music, running until August 11 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage.

TUESDAY & THURSDAY: Theatre Under the Stars presents performances in Stanley Park of the musical School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, with pre-show performances from School of Rock Vancouver.

WEDNESDAY: Pyro Tact, a pyrotechnics team from Malaysia, lights up the sky on the second night of the Celebration of Light fireworks event at English Bay.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Playland features midway games, attractions like the Haunted Mansion and Sweet Escape Mini Golf, food options, and numerous rides, including the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt. Playland runs until August 16 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

Graham Clark is at Little Mountain Gallery

THURSDAY: Vancouver comedian Graham Clark is featured in The Laugh Gallery, a night of standup at Little Mountain Gallery. Here’s my interview with Graham Clark from 2021.

THURSDAY: Vancouver guitar great Paul Pigat performs a solo show as part of the fourth annual Create! Eastside Arts FestivalJuly 25 at the Firehall Arts Centre. Here’s my interview with Pigat from 2021.

FRIDAY: Canadian rocker Art Bergmann celebrates the 10th anniversary of his Songs for the Underclass album at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests the Brahmankind. Here’s my interview with Bergmann from 1990.

FRIDAY: Comedy Here Often? features standup comedy at 604 Studios by Michaela Chung, Mike Greenwood, Smaranda Luna, Tyler Boissonnault, and headliner Joey Comisso.

FRIDAY: the Cool Blues Show at Fort Langley Community Park features performances by Tom Lavin & Powder Blues, Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, Miss Emily, Silent Partners (tribute to B.B. King), and Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne.

FRIDAY: Vancouver guitarist Ron Samworth performs traditional jazz standards, interpretations of rock and folk songs, and original compositions at Frankie’s Jazz, accompanied by double bassist James Meger and drummer Omar Amlani.

The Devin Cuddy Band plays Mission Folk Fest

FRIDAY: first day of the three-day Mission Folk Music Festival, which features food trucks, an artisan market, beer garden, and more than 20 musical acts from Canada, the U.S., and beyond performing at Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park.
