FRIDAY: Comedy Here Often? features standup comedy at 604 Studios by Michaela Chung, Mike Greenwood, Smaranda Luna, Tyler Boissonnault, and headliner Joey Comisso.

FRIDAY: the Cool Blues Show at Fort Langley Community Park features performances by Tom Lavin & Powder Blues, Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, Miss Emily, Silent Partners (tribute to B.B. King), and Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne.

FRIDAY: Vancouver guitarist Ron Samworth performs traditional jazz standards, interpretations of rock and folk songs, and original compositions at Frankie’s Jazz, accompanied by double bassist James Meger and drummer Omar Amlani.

Art Bergmann plays the Rickshaw

FRIDAY: Canadian rocker Art Bergmann celebrates the 10th anniversary of his Songs for the Underclass album at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests the Brahmankind. Here’s my interview with Bergmann from 1990.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, running until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.

Ring of Fire runs at the Granville Island Stage

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash is featured in Ring of Fire, a theatrical concert created by Richard Maltby, Jr. that delves into the heart of Cash’s music, running until August 11 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the three-day Mission Folk Music Festival features food trucks, an artisan market, beer garden, and more than 20 musical acts from Canada, the U.S., and beyond performing at Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis is an exhibition of 17 self-portraits by photographer Martine Gutierrez, running until September 29 at the Polygon Gallery.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Playland features midway games, attractions like the Haunted Mansion and Sweet Escape Mini Golf, food options, and numerous rides, including the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt. Playland runs until August 16 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

Wrexham AFC plays the Whitecaps

SATURDAY: Wrexham AFC, the Wales-based soccer team owned by actors Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), plays the Vancouver Whitecaps in an intercontinental matchup at BC Place.

SATURDAY: Theatre Under the Stars presents a performance in Stanley Park of the musical School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, with pre-show performances from School of Rock Vancouver.

SATURDAY: Pyrotex Fireworx, a pyrotechnics team from the United Kingdom, lights up the sky on the third and final night of the Celebration of Light fireworks event at English Bay.

SUNDAY: American rock singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo, former member of the Nuns, Rank & File, True Believers, and Buick McKane, plays the Pearl, with guest James Castro. Here’s my interview with Escovedo from 1997.

The Terminator screens at the Rio

SUNDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of a 40th anniversary restoration of The Terminator, director James Cameron’s sci-fi actioner about a time-traveling cyborg assassin, followed by a pre-taped Q&A with Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd.
