10 minutes on the phone with Judas Priest’s Rob Halford in 1990

By Steve Newton

I’ve interviewed Rob Halford four times because I quite like Judas Priest, and besides–he’s the Metal God, is he not?

Our first chat was in 1984, and this was the second conversation, on October 5, 1990, one month after the release of Priest’s Painkiller album.

Two months earlier the band made headlines worldwide when a judge dismissed a high-profile civil case in Nevada involving a suicide pact allegedly brought on by subliminal messages embedded in the band’s 1978 cover of the 1969 Spooky Tooth song “Better by You, Better than Me”.

So of course I had to ask Rob if he thought all the press surrounding the trial would help the sales of the new album.
