FRIDAY: Vancouver blues-roots trio the Grand Koolios–composed of guitarist Tim Hearsey, bassist Rob Becker, and drummer Chris Nordquist–plays Guilt and Co.
FRIDAY: Vancouver soul-blues quintet the Mojo Stars–composed of singer-guitarist Randy Clarke, guitarist Mark Rankin, saxman Tom Gould, bassist Trevor Newman, and drummer Terry Hoff–plays Frankie’s Jazz.

Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis at Polygon Gallery
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis is an exhibition of 17 self-portraits by photographer Martine Gutierrez, running until September 29 at the Polygon Gallery.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, running until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

Ride the new ThunderVolt at the PNE
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the 2024 PNE Fair runs until September 2, featuring numerous exhibits, attractions, and entertainment, including the SuperDogs, Dueling Pianos, agriculture displays, drag show, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, and rides such as the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt.
SATURDAY: Tennessee rock quartet Kings of Leon—composed of brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill, and their cousin Matthew Followill–plays Rogers Arena, with guests Phantogram. Here’s my interview with Nathan Followill from 2003.
SATURDAY: Edmonton-based pop-punk quartet Calling All Captains plays the Pearl, with guests Chief State, Swear Jar, and Cloud Sick.
SATURDAY: Liverpool electropop quartet Ladytron plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Bloom Effect.

Stop Making Sense screens at the Rio
SUNDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of a recently upgraded 4K version of director Jonathan Demme’s 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, starring Talking Heads.
