Fubar’s Pilsner-shotgunning “Governor of givin’r” returns to the big screen in Deaner ’89

By Steve Newton

If you don’t have any plans for this Friday (September 6), you might want to consider going to the movies, ’cause that’s when Mongrel Media‘s Deaner ’89–a new heavy-metal comedy flick starring Canadian actor Paul Spence from the Fubar films–hits theatres.

According to a recent press release from Pender PR, in the Manitoba-shot origin story “hard-luck metalhead Dean Murdoch (Spence) reveals how he finally made it, taking us back to the ’80s–when being a hockey jock was a badge of honour, Jazzercise was a national movement, seatbelts were optional, and teachers were as drunk as their students.”

The movie–which is not officially connected to the Fubar franchise–was directed by Sam McGlynn and also features Canuck thesps Will Sallo from Mad TV, Mary Walsh from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and Kevin McDonald from The Kids in the Hall.

I personally thought the first two Fubar movies–2002’s Fubar and 2010’s Fubar 2–were totally decent, in a lowbrow, Trailer Park Boys-on-the-prairies kinda way.

I especially liked the part in Fubar 2 where some rowdy Albertan pulls a chainsaw out of his pickup to get the eviction party started to the glorious strains of Black Sabbath‘s “Die Young” while a wasted Deaner communicates with the spirit of Ronnie James Dio:

Another thing I liked about the whole Fubar trip was the way the actors fearlessly promoted the incessant shotgunning of Ear of Newt’s beer of choice, Molson Old Style Pilsner (check out this website’s banner).

Now that’s what I call devotion to your craft:

From the looks of the new Deaner ’89 trailer, those beautiful Christmas-coloured Pilsner cans have been replaced by some other beer brand for shotgunning purposes, but that doesn’t mean the movie’s gonna suck. Check it out:

Deaner ’89 opens September 6 in Metro Vancouver at Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinemas, SilverCity Riverport, Cineplex Cinemas Coquitlam, and Cineplex Cinemas Langley.
