The Fringe Fest is on Granville Island

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1997 cult sci-fi/horror flick Event Horizon, about a a group of astronauts sent to investigate and salvage a starship that disappeared on its maiden voyage. Here’s my original rave review from 1997.
FRIDAY: Spokane, Washington blues-rock trio Too Slim and the Taildraggers, featuring singer-guitarist Tim “Too Slim” Langford, plays White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios. Here’s the interview I did with Tim Langford back in 2000.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis is an exhibition of 17 self-portraits by photographer Martine Gutierrez, running until September 29 at the Polygon Gallery.

The Canadians play the Emeralds
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Eugene Emeralds in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, running until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Fringe Festival runs until September 15 on Granville Island, featuring an eclectic program of over 65 shows that span the likes of theatre, dance, spoken word, comedy, opera, and improv. Highlights include Michaela Chung’s Daddy Issues, Charla Hathaway’s Naked at my Age, and Holly M. Brinkman’s A Woman’s Guide to Peeing Outside.
