Sue Foley plays the Rio

FRIDAY: Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin performs music from Italian horror movies such as Suspiria, Deep Red, Demons, and Tenebre at the Hollywood Theatre.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Grammy-winning composer Tan Dun conducts the Canadian premiere of his epic choral work of love and compassion, Buddha Passion, inspired by Chinese and Sanskrit texts, at the Orpheum Theatre.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báez, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Lumiere Festival runs downtown
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the 2024 Lumiere Festival features various small and large-scale illuminated artworks and light-based projections accompanied by performances at various locations across downtown Vancouver.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Cirque du Soleil‘s Echo, running to January 5 at Concord Pacific Place, combines poetry, stagecraft, acrobatics, and technology to explores the delicate balance between people, animals, and the world.
SATURDAY: Washington, D.C. pop-punk/emo duo Origami Angel plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Arm’s Length, Macseal, and Forests.

The Oilers are in town
SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Edmonton Oilers in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.
SUNDAY: Canadian-born, Texas-based blues-rocker Sue Foley performs tunes from new album One Guitar Woman at the Rio Theatre. Here’s my interview with Sue Foley from 1992.
SUNDAY: as part of the Festival of Recorded Movement (FORM), The Get-Down: Ladies Cypher at Q7 Studios celebrates women in Vancouver’s street dance community.
