FRIDAY: New Jersey heartland rockers Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band perform the Boss’s past hits and tunes from his latest album Only the Strong Survive at Rogers Arena.
FRIDAY: Comedy Here Often? presents standup comedy by Will Corry, Niki Mohrdar, Kay, Abdul Ali, and headliner Sterling Scott at 604 Studios.
FRIDAY: Canadian rock quartet Toque–composed of singer-guitarist Todd Kerns, guitarist Cory Churko, bassist Brent Fitz, and drummer Shane Gaalaas–performs originals and classic Canuck-rock covers at Great Canadian Casino Vancouver, with guests Spendo. Here’s my interview with Todd Kerns from 2011.
Chain Reactions screens at the Rio
FRIDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of the documentary Chain Reactions, about the profound impact and lasting influence of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, with director Alexandre O. Phillippe in attendance for a Q&A.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báez, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Cirque du Soleil‘s Echo, running to January 5 at Concord Pacific Place, combines poetry, stagecraft, acrobatics, and technology to explores the delicate balance between people, animals, and the world.
Never Look Away screens at VIFF Centre
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of Never Look Away, director Lucy Lawless‘s new documentary about the harrowing career of fearless combat camerawoman Margaret Moth.
SATURDAY: Canadian supergroup the Trans-Canada Highwaymen–composed of Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Craig Northey (Odds), Chris Murphy (Sloan), and Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness)–plays a fundraising gala/cocktail reception at West Van’s Kay Meek Arts Centre.
SATURDAY: Canadian roots-pop singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards (“Hockey Skates”) plays the Biltmore Cabaret, with guest Ken Yates. SOLD OUT. Here’s my interview with Edwards from 2005.
The Stand screens at the Rio
SUNDAY: 30th anniversary Canadian theatrical premiere at the Rio Theatre of Stephen King‘s mini-series The Stand, with all four episodes screened back-to-back and director Mick Garris on hand for a live Q&A.
