
Kerry King plays the Commodore

MONDAY: former Slayer guitarist Kerry King performs thrash-metal tunes from his debut solo album From Hell I Rise at the Commodore Ballroom, with guests Municipal Waste and Alien Weaponry.
MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báez, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Sabres are in town
TUESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Buffalo Sabres in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: The Lind Biennial, running until February 2 at Polygon Gallery, is a showcase of new work by the finalists of the Philip B. Lind Prize for Emerging Artists. Exhibiting artists include Mena El Shazly, Karice Mitchell, Dion Smith-Dokkie, Parumveer Walia, and Casey Wei.
THURSDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of director Bong Joon-Ho’s satirical 2006 monster movie The Host, the most successful Korean film ever made. In English and Korean with English subtitles.
THURSDAY TO FRIDAY: the annual PuSh Festival, running until February 9 at various Vancouver venues, features contemporary works of live art–dance, theatre, music, and multimedia–by local, national, and international performers.

FRIDAY: French guitarist Stéphane Wrembel performs Gypsy jazz and world music at West Vancouver’s Kay Meek Arts Centre.

FRIDAY: the Snowed In Comedy Tour at the York Theatre features standup comedy by Dan Quinn, Paul Myrehaug, Pete Zedlacher, and Erica Sigurdson.

The Silence of the Lambs screens at the Rio
FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Jonathan Demme’s Oscar-winning 1991 horror flick The Silence of the Lambs, starring Jodie Foster as FBI agent Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins as evil genius Hannibal Lecter. Here’s my original review from 1991.
