FRIDAY: Adventures in Pedal Steel at the WISE Hall features pedal-steel guitarist Scott Smith hosting an event that includes lectures and performances by steel players Matt Kelly, Conner West, Ben Vallee, and Mike Drassler.

FRIDAY: Maddy Kelly & Friends is a standup comedy show at Chill x Studio hosted by Vancouver comedian and podcaster Maddy Kelly. Here’s my interview with Maddy Kelly from 2022.

FRIDAY: San Diego tribute band Chest Fever performs the greatest hits of The Band at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guest Mrs. Henry.

The Wages of Fear screens at the Cinematheque

FRIDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of a new restoration of director Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 thriller The Wages of Fear, about four outcasts who agree to drive two truckloads of nitroglycerine over treacherous jungle roads to an oil-well fire raging 350 miles away.

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Tony Scott’s 1993 action flick True Romance, about newlyweds on the run from the Mafia after stealing a shipment of drugs.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the annual PuSh Festival, running until February 9 at various Vancouver venues, features contemporary works of live art–dance, theatre, music, and multimedia–by local, national, and international performers.

Heathers: the Musical runs at Studio 58

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: performances of the dark comedy Heathers: The Musical, based on the 1988 film about a trio of popular girls who mercilessly rule their high school, running until February 16 at Langara College’s Studio 58.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báezorganized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on captain Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

Songs to Phil the Air is at the ANZA Club

SATURDAY: Songs to Phil the Air is a tribute to late Grateful Dead bassist and vocalist Phil Lesh at the ANZA Club that features performances by local bassists Marcus Charalambous, Gary Bulloch, Eric Stephenson, Britton Liakakos, and Dave Gyurkovics.
