Odds play the Commodore on Friday

MONDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of Sorcerer, director William Friedkin’s 1977 remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 thriller The Wages of Fear, about four outcasts who agree to drive two truckloads of nitroglycerine over treacherous jungle roads to an oil-well fire raging 350 miles away.
MONDAY TO FRIDAY: Just for Laughs Vancouver is a comedy festival running to February 23 at various Vancouver venues, featuring performances this week by Brian Simpson, Maddy Smith, Pete Holmes, Brian Long, Erica Rhodes, and Ashley Gavin.
MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: exhibition of paintings by New York City-based artist Firelei Báez, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, runs until March 16 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Wonderful Joe runs at the Cultch
TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: performances at the Cultch Historic Theatre until February 23 of Toronto puppeteer Ronnie Burkett‘s Wonderful Joe, about a man and his dog who head into the world for one last grand adventure together.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: xʷəlməxʷ child, running until May 25 at North Vancouver’s Polygon Gallery, features Manuel Axel Strain‘s figurative paintings, transformed into pictographs and set against photographic murals.
FRIDAY: Portland-based country-rock quintet the Rose City Band plays tunes from latest album Sol Y Sombra at the Fox Cabaret, with guest Lee Baggett.

Limblifter plays the Commodore
FRIDAY: Vancouver rock bands Odds & Limblifter, led by respective singer-songwriters Craig Northey and Ryan Dahle, play the Commodore Ballroom. Here’s my interview with Craig Northey from 1997 and my interview with Ryan Dahle from 2000.
FRIDAY: North Carolina alt-country/indie-rock singer-songwriter MJ Lenderman plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Wild Pink. SOLD OUT.
FRIDAY: Let Hope Prevail is a fundraising concert for the Gaza Children’s Fund and UN World Food Program at the Canadian Memorial United Church, featuring performances by the Tanglewood Trio, Luke Wallace, and the No Sh!t Shirleys.

Eraserhead screens at the Rio
FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of Eraserhead, late director David Lynch‘s creepy and surreal 1977 examination of male paranoia.
