
Larkin Poe plays the Commodore

FRIDAY: as part of the Verses Festival of Words 2025, Mashed Poetics presents 12 local poets performing all 12 songs from the Tragically Hip‘s 1992 album Fully Completely at Chill X Studio. Here’s my interview with Gord Downie from 1992.
FRIDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of No Other Land, the Oscar-winning documentary about the realities of Israeli occupation in the State of Palestine’s West Bank. In Arabic, Hebrew, and English, with English subtitles.
FRIDAY: free National Canadian Film Day screening at the Rio Theatre of director John Fawcett’s 2000 horror flick Ginger Snaps, about two morbid teenage sisters whose relationship is tested when one is bitten by an unknown animal and slowly transforms into a werewolf.

Coco Montoya plays the Rickshaw
FRIDAY: American blues guitarist Coco Montoya, former member of John Mayall‘s Bluesbreakers and the Albert Collins Band, plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with local guest Robert Connely Farr. Here’s my interview with Coco Montoya from 2003 and my interview with Robert Connely Farr from 2021.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” exhibition, running until May 25 at 1 Alexander Street, features over 200 prints, photos, sculptures, installations, and murals by world-famous street artist Banksy.
SATURDAY: American roots-rock duo Larkin Poe, composed of sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, plays the Commodore Ballroom, with guest Parker Millsap.

Brass Camel plays the WISE Hall
SATURDAY: Vancouver prog/funk-rock band Brass Camel, featuring guitarist-vocalist Daniel Sveinson, plays a release party for new album Camel at the WISE Hall, with guests Bleako’s Nuclear Disco. Here’s my interview with Daniel Sveinson from 2004.
SATURDAY: eight-piece Vancouver band Zappostrophe performs tunes by Frank Zappa at the VIFF Centre, followed by a rare screening of Zappa’s 1971 cult movie 200 Motels.
SATURDAY: Canadian rock band from the ’70s, Chilliwack, featuring singer-guitarist Bill Henderson, performs at the Vogue Theatre on its Farewell to Friends Tour. Here’s my interview with Bill Henderson from 2000.

The Big Lebowski screens at the Rio
SUNDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of directors Joel and Ethan Coen’s hilarious 1998 comedy The Big Lebowski, starring Jeff Bridges as “The Dude”.
